FATHER BRIAN SOLIVEN was assigned as Priest for Holy Family Catholic Church in Portola and Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Loyalton on January 15th.Father Brian was born in Hawaii, grew up in Sacramento and has family in Elk Grove. He said once in college and growing in his Catholic faith, he felt the call to serve.Father Brian described it as “a song in his head” that kept getting louder and louder. He finished his undergrad at UC Davis and entered the seminary at Mt. Angel in Oregon and then traveled to Rome for theology for five years. His first assignment was Carmichael, Ca.and Vacaville was his second, adding the Sacramento Bishop moves priests around where there’s a need. When asked if he’d ever been to this part of California, Father Brian said the closest he’d been was to Truckee. He called the area beautiful. He is a big outdoors guy, adding he loves the open space. Father Brian likes to go 4-wheeling, backpacking and camping and started a hiking ministry in Sacramento. He plans to offer parish hiking trips here locally and says it helps parishioners get to know each other better. He will continue the community dinners in Portola and
is amazed at the wide range of people who come to it. Father Brian said the dinners were a great opportunity for local businesses to have an outreach. The meal is free and occurs the last Wednesday of eachmonth.

As far as other plans, Father Brian is still getting to know the parish and needs of the community, but is happy to be here to serve in any way he can.
